Just another day.

Are you in or out?

What’s the deal with people’s obsession with being homosexual these days?  Have you noticed that on at least one magazine cover a week, whether it be tabloid or fashion, there is a comment on whether or not this star is gay.  For example, Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson have been a highlight of gay talk for a while now.  My question is, who really cares?  Does it make them more interesting if they are?  As far as I can see, they’re pretty much regular people doing regular things.  It seems everyone is waiting for them to come “out”.  Don’t you think their personal life should be private.  I mean a lot of celebs keep their private life private as far as who they’re dating, pregnancy rumors, breakups.  These are the things that help them keep a shred of normalcy when everything they do is being broadcast.

Another is Chace Crawford and his roommate Ed Westwick.  Oh because they’re roommates, that means they have to be gay right?  Come on!!   In one of the June issues of US magazine, there was even a blurb about whether or not he was gay.  Is this really newsworthy?  Guys can’t be roommates and be totally heterosexual?  I better inform my buddy who rooms with two other guys, it might be a total shocker for him!

This is a new generation and new times.  Why should someone’s sexuality be in question.  There was a time when homosexuality was so taboo that people hid it, living in constant fear of someone finding out.  Rock Hudson is a great example.  His entire public life was pretty much a sham with the studios trying to make him a ladies man and actually marrying just to keep up the fascade.   The sad truth is being gay in Hollywood is still taboo.  What’s worse is that the United States is really a lot more tight-lipped on the subject than other countries.  Sir Ian McKellan, Rupert Everett, Alan Cumming are all very successful actors from across the pond that live their lives out in the open.  Why would that fact cause Jude Law to get the leading romantic role over someone like Rupert Everett when the latter would be a better choice?  Remember when Ellen Degeneres came out, it really hurt her television career.  Fortunately, she has been able to resurrect her career on her talent not her sexuality, even though she is the first openly gay person to host the Academy Awards.

The question still remains.  Would it really have made a difference if we knew Rock Hudson was gay?  Does that fact take away from his phenomenal acting skills?  Did it make a difference when we found out Neil Patrick Harris was gay?  He’s still the great actor and person he was.   Maybe we should worry less about who these people are dating or sleeping whether they be gay or straight and really take notice of their talent.  If they’re not ready to come out, then let them be.  Who are we to speculate about other’s personal lives?  Maybe the next time you pick up a copy of the Star or Sun while in line at the supermarket you should skip the article about Oprah and Gail being in a gay relationship and see what’s really in the news.

Agreed. There’s so much more to a person than who he’s attracted to.
